About Watsmen

Watsmen is building an engineering-led industrial group. We connect technical capability, disciplined execution and practical commercial judgement to deliver valuable industrial solutions.

Role Purpose

Build a practical, evidence-led risk, ethics and compliance system for Watsmen's industrial activities. Help accountable leaders identify exposure, apply proportionate controls and demonstrate corrective action. Provide independent challenge and a usable escalation route, while preserving the legal responsibilities of each entity and the technical responsibilities of competent discipline owners.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver a Group risk register with clear risk statements, accountable owners, existing controls, evidence gaps and response plans; distinguish institutional exposure from risks belonging to separately governed projects, platforms, trade activity and acquisitions.
  • Establish a risk-based compliance obligations map with legal and local advisers, recording applicability, responsible owners, control evidence and review dates; avoid presenting unverified assumptions as confirmed regulatory duties or completed compliance.
  • Implement proportionate integrity controls for conflicts of interest, third-party due diligence, gifts and hospitality, and anti-bribery risks; document escalation triggers and decisions, with commercial or country owners accountable for required follow-through.
  • Maintain an accessible concern-reporting and case-management process with appropriate confidentiality, fair handling and non-retaliation safeguards; preserve relevant evidence and escalate serious matters through an approved route that addresses conflicts involving normal management channels.
  • Deliver targeted control monitoring and thematic reviews, testing whether controls operate in practice; maintain findings, severity rationale, action owners and closure evidence, escalating repeated failures or unsupported assertions of remediation.
  • Build risk and ethics capability through role-relevant guidance, briefings and lessons learned; provide concise management reporting that identifies emerging patterns, unresolved exposure and decisions needed without replacing operational ownership or technical assurance.
  • Provide proportionate opportunity screening with named review owners and clear escalation; track timely resolution and recurring control failures without allowing commercial urgency to determine risk acceptance.

First 90 Days

  • By day 30: Map immediate risk and compliance exposures, existing controls and available reporting channels; agree a prioritised assessment plan and proposed independent escalation arrangements with General Counsel and the CEO.
  • By day 60: Establish the initial risk register, obligations map and third-party integrity workflow; submit concern-handling and conflict-management procedures for approval and deliver focused guidance to priority role holders.
  • By day 90: Complete an initial risk-based control review; present substantiated findings, remediation status and unresolved exposures, with evidence that concern escalation and action tracking are operational. Demonstrate opportunity-screening ownership, aged issues, resolution evidence and actions addressing recurring failures.

Essential Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to translate risk and compliance requirements into practical, testable controls
  • Experience assessing third-party integrity, conflicts or business-conduct risks with balanced professional judgement
  • Ability to investigate facts objectively, handle confidential records and distinguish evidence from allegation
  • Skill in influencing operational leaders while maintaining independent challenge and clear escalation
  • Ability to work with legal, financial and technical specialists without claiming their professional authority

Desirable Experience

  • Experience in industrial, engineering, trade or resource-sector risk environments
  • Relevant risk, compliance, audit or ethics qualification
  • Experience establishing controls across multiple entities or jurisdictions

Authority And Decision Boundaries

  • Request control evidence and recommend remediation within an approved mandate; acceptance of residual risk remains with the formally designated authority.
  • Escalate material concerns independently through the approved route, including concerns involving the reporting line; this role does not confer unrestricted investigation, disciplinary, legal-signing or technical-release authority.
